naturalistic terrace / gowanus, brooklyn

Conceived as a daily sanctuary and entertaining space, the design of this 800 square-foot terrace is a unique combination of the client’s and my shared love of Japanese and design and the coastal landscape of Cape Cod.
Lush naturalistic plantings divide the original open space into two sizeable seating areas, creating an intimate feel to each space. Our custom-designed, hardwood benches have low, deep seats, angled backs, and an open design that feels airier than the standard box bench. The custom furniture and all-weather flat-screen TV complete the first seating area separated from the loungy conversation set.
Beach roses, Bayberry, Blueberry bushes, and Beach Plumb sit nestled below tall, delicate Birch and White Pines. Soft-textured native flowering perennials like Euthamia caroliniana, Lythrum alatum, and Limonium carolinianum hide among the tall swaying reed grass while yellow sprays of Carolina jasmine hang from a cable trellis alongside the terrace entrance. It’s become a real bird sanctuary among the rooftops!
